JPod by Douglas Coupland

Hell yeah, this book's going to make you laugh a lot. Unless you're a totally unfunny dickhead, of course.  But wait, maybe it's not that easy ...

JPod was my first book by Douglas Coupland who's probably most famous for his 1991 novel "Generation X". (Reminder to myself: read Generation X.) The scenery it describes is pretty much where I see myself living in. Not in every little detail of course, but in the big picture. So, that's probably why I had no problems understanding even the weird things of this book and finding them funny. But after some research on the web I find that this novel divides opinions.
To point that out I will link two reviews on it, one which is positive, and one which is negative.

For me, this book was - after some challenging novels - a relaxing read, that made me laugh out loud and even inspired me in some ways. Not to see everything too close-minded (is that a word?) and being more gritty when doing art for example.

Madlib Medicine Show #13 ft. MF Doom and Jadakiss

Yep, here we go again. Stones Throw Rec. just released part 13 of the highly recommended Madlib Medicine Show. I just recently got all the available Vinyls and CDs from overseas and although I was expecting a lot, I was again overwhelmed by Madlib's sickness and musical spectrum. Full Support. MMS features oustanding HipHop on the edge of its musical (not technical) evolution paired with mix-CDs full of Madlib's influences. Worth every fucking dollar.

Greenpeace propaganda campaign

In their newspaper "The Daily David" Greenpeace recently released a serious of supercool propaganda illustrations. They're apparentyl supposed to strengthen the image of Greenpeace as David, in his fight against Goliath, who embodies the world industry / economy / evil. By the way, the illustration were drawn by Anatolij Pickman. Check his page here. Good Stuff. 

"Blue Monk" played beautifully by german dudes

Not many words needed on this one. Great interpretation on Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk". Especially got hooked on the guitar solo..but everything is nice..lovin' Jazz...lovin' it!

The Cry of Jazz (1959)

'The Cry of Jazz' is reckognized as one of the earliest examples for Afro-American independent film making. It was produced in 1959 by Edward Bland.

Apparently, it is about Jazz. Less apparently, it is also about the theory, that the structure of Jazz mirrors the social situation of Afro-Americans back then. 

The great Sun Ra and his Arkestra are responsible for the music in this film. Reason enough to have a look. And listen!

ELB Soundsystem EP inkl. Flipmatic RMX

Some time ago, I made a remix for an EP by ELB Soundsystem aka Elbis from Karlsruhe. He happened to be one of the first beatmakers/producers I worked with, digged for records and simply shared good times talking bout music and beats. The EP is still available on Elbis' Soundcloud page. Besides Elbis' original and my remix it features three more remixes from hiphop (Mars) via dubstep (Rob Zulla) to some deeper, housier stuff (Phaid). Have a listen!

Summary/Overview "Copyright in the 21st century"

All the buzz about SOPA/PIPA/ACTA and Megaupload has brought the topic copyright on the screens of many people, who probably haven't been aware of that issue before. On Neunetz.com (which happens to be a good blog for all things internet) you can now find a profound summary about copyright and filesharing in the 21st century. 

Marcel Weiss, the author of neunetz.com, is writing about copyright issues since 2007, and you can be sure that he knows what's up. The summary is great for everybody who's just beginnnig to show interest in this topic. Unfortunately, it is written in German, although I think there's a large audience of non-German people and artists (especially in the music-scene in Berlin) which could be interested in those informations too, as they have to deal with it when releasing music over here. 
Therefor, I might translate the most important parts step by step, and publish them on this blog. Let me know If you are one of those readers, it might speed up the progress.

This is the first guest post on Antichris. It is a short article including interview about the German Pirates, who claim to strengthen the civil rights. I'm sorry for not having the time to translate it for my english speaking readers.

Die Piratenpartei hat sich die Stärkung der Bürgerrechte auf die Fahne geschrieben. Die Freiheit der Menschen soll vor staatlichen Eingriffen geschützt werden. Ein zunächst kaum streitbares Ziel. Doch wie viel Freiheit wollen die Menschen tatsächlich? Im Gespräch mit einem Piraten.
 
Die Piratenpartei sieht die Freiheit vor allem durch eine zunehmende Kontrolle des Staates in Form von Online-Durchsuchungen, Erfassung und Speicherung persönlicher Daten und den Tendenzen zur Zensur im Internet gefährdet. Aber auch die aktuell praktizierte Drogenpolitik und Familienpolitik halten die Piraten für eine Beschneidung der Selbstbestimmung. Abwegig ist das nicht. Ist es wirklich Sache des Staates, zu entscheiden, welche Substanzen ein Bürger konsumieren darf und welche nicht? Ist es Sache des Staates, die unterschiedlichen Lebensentwürfe der Menschen zu bewerten, beispielsweise durch steuerliche Begünstigung der Ehe? Jedoch ist der Staat in einer Demokratie keine vom Volk losgelöste Institution. Entscheidungen werden durch gewählte Repräsentanten getroffen. Die Bürger haben die Einschränkungen in ihrer Selbstbestimmung also auch selbst zu verantworten.

Es ist Dienstagabend, kurz nach 20.00 Uhr. Alexander Spies, Abgeordneter der Berliner Piraten, kommt direkt aus einer Besprechung und ist leicht außer Atem, als er in der Lobby des Abgeordnetenhauses in Berlin Platz nimmt und seine LIDL-Tüte neben den stilvollen Sitzgelegenheiten aus schwarzem Leder abstellt. Gehetzt wirkt er nur in den ersten Sekunden. Er liegt mit seinen 56 Jahren deutlich über dem Altersdurchschnitt seiner Parteigenossen und verfügt über eine etwas gesteigerte Leibesfülle. Als das Gespräch beginnt, strahlt er sofort eine angenehme Ruhe aus. Er antwortet ausführlich und mit Bedacht. Die nötige Ausdauer für politische Debatten fehlt ihm offensichtlich nicht und so nimmt das Interview auch deutlich mehr Zeit in Anspruch, als ursprünglich geplant. Es folgt ein Auszug.




Laut der Kandidatenvorstellung auf der Website der Berliner Piraten ist Ihre politische Motivation die „Erkenntnis, dass Grundrechte ausgehöhlt, Menschenrechte mit Füßen getreten und Mitmenschlichkeit der Profitgier geopfert“ wird. Würden Sie das kurz erläutern?

Nun, das ist ein bisschen schlagwortartig formuliert.
 
Plakativ?
 
Plakativ, genau. Ich will das jetzt auch gar nicht zerreden. In alltäglichen Situationen müssen sich die Menschen oft fragen: „Bin ich jetzt solidarisch, helfe jemandem und riskiere vielleicht sogar etwas dabei oder denke ich jetzt nur an mich?“
 
Der alltägliche Konkurrenzkampf?
 
Der alltägliche Konkurrenzkampf, ja. Und da haben wir heute eine Gesellschaft geschaffen, in der sich die Menschen im Zweifel immer öfter für die Ellbogen entscheiden. Und das ist eben die Grundkritik, die ich da äußern wollte, also ohne jetzt lehrermäßig auf bestimmte Werte abzustellen: „Ihr solltet aber so oder ihr solltet so...“. Das ist einfach eine Entwicklung, der ich entgegensteuern möchte.
 
Alle lieben die Freiheit. Was genau steht einer wirklich freiheitlichen Gesellschaft mit größtmöglicher Selbstbestimmung denn dann überhaupt im Weg?


Nun, es ist ganz klar, wenn man eine freiheitliche Gesellschaft will, das ist eigentlich eine Binsenweisheit, dann muss man eben gewisse Gefährdungen, die damit verbunden sind, auch in Kauf nehmen. Ein großes Problem ist auch eine gewisse, natürliche Faulheit des Menschen. Ich habe das früher immer so formuliert: Ich kann mir eigentlich nur vorstellen, dass Diktaturen oder Oligarchien deshalb entstehen, weil die Menschen einfach zu faul sind, um die Dinge selbst in die Hand zu nehmen. Weil sie eben einfach irgendwann ihre Freiheit dafür aufgeben, dass sie sich einigermaßen sicher und bemuttert fühlen, ohne dafür wirklich viel tun zu müssen. Die Freiheit ist immer anstrengender.

 
Kaum ein Bürger wünscht sich Kontrolle und Bevormundung durch den Staat. Wie konnte es dann, angesichts demokratischer Wahlen, überhaupt dazu kommen?
 
Naja, ich möchte das mal anders formulieren. Es kommt immer darauf an, wie man die Leute fragt. Wenn man die Leute fragt: „Willst du bevormundet werden, willst du kontrolliert werden?“, dann sagen alle: „Nein!“, aber wenn man sie umgekehrt fragt: „Möchtest du bevormunden, möchtest du kontrollieren?“, dann erhält man oft eine andere Antwort. Das ist immer eine Frage der Perspektive. Das, was man für sich selbst vielleicht ablehnt, das mutet man anderen ganz selbstverständlich zu, solange es einen selbst nicht betrifft. Das ist das St. Florian-Prinzip, das jeder irgendwo ein bisschen lebt.

Die menschlichen Eigenschaften, die sie beschreiben, sind nicht besonders erfolgversprechend für freiheitliche Gesellschaftsmodelle.

Das ist natürlich nur eine Seite des Menschen. Und das Wichtigste was man von den Menschen fordern muss, ist die Freiheit, das ist eigentlich ganz einfach. Es liegt dem Menschen in der Wiege, dass er einfach unheimlich gerne frei sein möchte. Das ist ein innerer Drang und ich appelliere, diese Energie, die darin steckt, für den Menschen und die Gesellschaft zu gewinnen. Dadurch hat jeder Mensch eine Motivation, die Anstrengungen, die mit der Freiheit verbunden sind, zu leisten.




Für den inneren Drang zur Freiheit, den Alexander Spies anspricht, gibt es sowohl in der Vergangenheit, als auch in der Gegenwart zahlreiche Belege. Ereignisse, wie die Französische Revolution oder ganz aktuell der Arabische Frühling, zeigen, dass Menschen bereit sind, ihr Leben im Kampf für die Freiheit zu riskieren und zu opfern. Dennoch ist die Haltung der Menschen zur Freiheit kontrovers. Hat ein Volk sie einmal erreicht, ist es offenbar bereit, sie schrittweise wieder abzugeben. Als Gründe nennt Spies im Wesentlichen Bequemlichkeit, Konkurrenzdenken und ein auf Ängsten basierendes Misstrauen anderen gegenüber. Dass diese Ängste und dieses Misstrauen schrittweise dazu führen können, dass der Wunsch nach Kontrolle und Überwachung zunimmt und so die Freiheit einzelner immer mehr beschnitten wird, liegt nahe. Besonders dann, wenn den Menschen die primäre Durchsetzung eigener Interessen vorgelebt wird.

Die Piraten wollen diesen Entwicklungen mittels staatlicher Transparenz, dem Zurückstutzen gewucherter Kontrollmechanismen und der Stärkung der Bürgerrechte entgegenwirken. Viele sehen in den Piraten jedoch nicht mehr als idealistische Fantasten. Das wiederum ist allerdings keine ungewöhnliche Reaktion auf neue Ideen und Ansätze. Spies jedenfalls scheint sich der Schwächen der Menschen und den damit verbundenen Problemen durchaus bewusst zu sein.

James Joyce's Dirty Letters

Shocking!

I found a nasty selection of love letters by the irish novelist and poet James Joyce, addressed to Nora Barnacle, the woman with whom James would go into self-imposed exile and who will give birth to his first child.

Full of shame I must admit that I haven't read Joyce yet. But this will change soon as I have laid eyes on Ulysses now, which is probably his most famous work. To get you hooked on Joyce, you might start with those letters I was talking about. To be found here. 

"Have I shocked you by the dirty things I wrote to you? You think perhaps that my love is a filthy thing. It is, darling, at some moments. I dream of you in filthy poses sometimes.
