[Books] Christian Kracht - Faserland

Having been in many feuilletons of German newspapers lately, Christian Kracht fetched my interest some month ago. He is a Swiss author and journalist, who has been working for the well known magazine "Der Spiegel". Today I will not write about his new novel, Imperium, but about his first: Faserland.

I can't remember what exactly I liked so much about it. Maybe the fact that after a long book it was easy to finish in two days. It doesn't really have a thrilling story: It's about a well-situated man in his thirties or forties, who is travelling from the very north of Germany to Switzerland via south germany. He meets old friends and more or less intensely interfears with their lives in a not so positive way.

[Books] Richard Price - Lush Life

I mentioned Richard Price in this blog some time ago (here). Besides writing books, he also created the great TV Series "The Wire". But this post is about books. About "Lush Life", to be specific.

As I am tired of thinking about how to write a half-decent book review, I thought about a faster way to post the books I read and like. I always liked statistics, so I am just listing some aspects and give points for them. Like that:

Authenticity: 5/5
Style: 4/5
Humor: 3/5
Dialogues: 5/5
Story: 4/5

To finish the review up. I will post a picture of a double page I more or less randomly photographed out of the book. This gives you a good idea about the style, language and maybe more.

For me it was a cool read. I was kinda scared that it would be hard to read, but no problem at all. I think I learned a lot of new words by reading it. Overall 4/5.

[Books] But Beautiful - A book about jazz (by Geoff Dyer)

But beautiful. Also special. Dangerous, maybe. Made me do things. Made me push my (musical) acting and thinking, too. Just check the infos I am posting here via video and reviews, paperback and so on. It should be enough to get a good idea about this book. I strongly suggest reading it in English as the original dialogues probably cant be translated too well. And I especially have to think about a dialogue between Charles Mingus and who was that again..Ben Webster? Yeah I guess so...Fucking hilarious..I was literally lying in bed, laughing out loud for about 5 minutes. Every new line making me laugh again...

'You dig them eggs, Mingus?'
'Yeah, I dig them eggs!'

I found a video by the Author Geoff Dyer. Cool Stuff. Cool author. I'll definitely check out his other books. Above the video I will put some editorial reviews. Enjoy. Buy here.

"May be the best book ever written about jazz."--David Thomson, Los Angeles Times
In eight poetically charged vignettes, Geoff Dyer skillfully evokes the music and the men who shaped modern jazz. Drawing on photos, anecdotes, and, most important, the way he hears the music, Dyer imaginatively reconstructs scenes from the embattled lives of some of the greats: Lester Young fading away in a hotel room; Charles Mingus storming down the streets of New York on a too-small bicycle; Thelonious Monk creating his own private language on the piano. However, music is the driving force of But Beautiful, and wildly metaphoric prose that mirrors the quirks, eccentricity, and brilliance of each musician's style.
